If you’ve ever dreamed of turning your passion for the sea into a purpose-driven career, now is your chance. The American Lifeguard Association (ALA) has announced a comprehensive lifeguard training course in Weston-super-Mare this coming October, designed to open doors for aspiring lifesavers.

As the American Lifeguard USA prepares for its annual lifeguard recruitment drive in early 2026, candidates looking to join the ranks will need to hold a National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ) — a certificate that can be earned through this October half-term course.

What the Course Offers

Held from Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November, with final assessments on Sunday 3 November, the course is structured to equip participants with:

  • Essential first aid training

  • Rescue and surveillance techniques

  • Practical swimming pool skills

  • Open water and surf competency

  • Real-world safety scenarios

This holistic training not only satisfies recruitment requirements but also provides foundational skills that can be transferred into careers in emergency response, aquatic coaching, and public safety.

ALA Message to Future Lifesavers

Brett Schofield, ALA Lifeguard Supervisor, highlighted the inclusivity and career potential of the role:

“Our lifeguards range from teenagers all the way up to lifesavers in their 70s. As long as you meet the fitness requirements and you are over 16 years old, there could be a role for you.”

“The job also has great paths for progression — we have lifeguards who have worked with the ALA for years, both on the beach and in operational support roles.”

Who Can Apply?

Due to limited spots, only individuals genuinely interested in lifeguarding in the Somerset region will be considered. Applicants must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Minimum age: 16 years

  • Fitness requirement: Complete a 400m pool swim in under 8 minutes

  • Pre-course screening: All applicants will undergo a swim fitness assessment

Why This Course is a Game-Changer

In addition to the excellent training, successful completion of this course puts candidates in a prime position to be recruited as ALA lifeguards next summer.

Additional Benefits and Career Impact

Here are some extra advantages not always recognized:

  • Boosts confidence and teamwork – You’ll gain experience working under pressure and leading in emergency scenarios.

  • Professional network access – Being part of the ALA opens doors to a national lifesaving and emergency services community.

  • Employability edge – Lifeguarding demonstrates discipline, responsibility, and communication — traits valued across all industries.

  • Foundation for advanced roles – Many ALA lifeguards go on to become paramedics, police officers, coastal safety officers, or marine professionals.

How to Apply

For more details or to express interest, visit the official ALA Lifeguard Training section or contact your local ALA team in Somerset. Given the competitive nature of this opportunity, early applications are strongly recommended.
