For many students, the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) is their first time living away from home, and often their first time in London. A big question for students and parents is: where will I stay, and will I be safe and comfortable?
This guide covers LIYSF accommodation: where participants live, what the rooms include, how students are supported and what life in the Halls is like during the two-week Forum.
Where Do LIYSF Students Stay?
Most participants stay in student residences at Imperial College London and other local student halls in South Kensington, just steps from the lecture theatre. That means less time travelling and more time enjoying the programme.
For the LIYSF 2027 programme (18 to 31 July 2027), participants stay for 13 nights in secure student halls at Imperial College London.
Prefer a hotel?
LIYSF also offers participants the option of staying in a 4-star hotel in South Kensington, within easy walking distance of the Forum venues.
The Three Halls: Red, Yellow and Blue
LIYSF students are split across three Halls of residence, known as the Red, Yellow and Blue Halls. Each Hall has its own LIYSF residential staff team and Hall host.
The Halls are more than a place to sleep. They also become teams during the Forum. At the LIYSF Olympics, a sports day with team games, each Hall competes as a team led by its Hall host, and students are encouraged to compete to cheer the loudest. Many friendships start with Hall spirit.
What’s Included in Standard Accommodation?
- Shared and private rooms in student residences, from single occupancy up to a maximum of four people sharing
- Ensuite and single-gender shared bathrooms
- Bedding and towels provided
- 24-hour reception with security in every hall
- 24/7 supervision by LIYSF staff who live in each hall
- Regular safety audits and checks
Safety and Support Around the Clock
Student safety is a top priority at LIYSF, and the accommodation is set up with that in mind:
- An LIYSF staff member lives in each residence, typically 5 to 8 staff per residence.
- Each residence has a staffed 24-hour reception with trained venue staff.
- A Student Welfare Officer, first aiders and a mental health first aider are part of the team.
- A 24/7 emergency phone line is staffed by trained people on site.
- Students wear an LIYSF lanyard at all times, which carries key emergency information.
Students are also supported by resident student counsellors. These are former LIYSF participants who understand exactly what it feels like to arrive at the Forum for the first time.
Meals and Everyday Comfort
- Meals: there is a choice at each meal, always including a vegetarian option. Special dietary needs are catered for where possible, and students should tell staff about any concerns.
- Prayer room: a 24-hour multi-faith prayer room is available.
- Additional needs: students with learning or special needs should let LIYSF know in advance so the right support can be arranged.
Packing Tips for Your LIYSF Stay
LIYSF asks participants to bring national dress or a traditional costume from their home country for the cultural evenings, such as Traditions of Home. Beyond that, here are some general tips (not official LIYSF rules):
- comfortable shoes for scientific visits and walking around London
- a light raincoat or umbrella, because London weather can change quickly in July
- a UK plug adapter for your phone and laptop
- anything you need for your Science Bazaar poster or a performance at the International Cabaret
Final Thoughts
LIYSF accommodation is designed so students can focus on what matters: learning, exploring and making friends from more than 90 countries. With secure halls next to the lecture theatres, staff living on site, 24-hour reception and plenty of support, students and parents can relax and enjoy the Forum. The Red, Yellow and Blue Halls quickly become a home away from home.
